Co-processing - a sustainable solution for waste management Date: 2008-03-27
The event will be attended by representatives of the central and local authorities, media and partner companies. On Saturday, March 29th, the local communities are invited for a plant tour and for the traditional party with music, activities for children and various surprises.
“We are all aware that the waste represents an important problem for the society of today. Being part of an international group with solid experience, Holcim (Romania) took the challenge of participating into this issue by offering a viable and environmentally-friendly solution, which is the waste co-processing in our cement plants,” said Markus Wirth, General Manager of Holcim (Romania).
Following investments of more than EUR 6 million, the cement plants in Alesd and Campulung can co-process a wide range of waste, from petroleum waste to rubber, plastic, paper, leather, textile and wood, coming from industrial generators or from sorting of the household waste.
“The waste co-processing in the cement plants is a safe process from all perspectives: the quality of the product, environmental protection, and occupational health and safety. The high temperature inside the kiln of the cement plant guarantees a complete and safe destruction of the waste and, simultaneously, the recovery of their energy and material content,” added Roman Menz, Director of Alesd Cement Plant, Holcim (Romania).
The joint investment done by Holcim (Romania) and ecovalor for the installation of solid waste treatment consists of an intermediary waste storage room, installation for shredding solid waste, temporary storage silo, installation for shredded solid waste dosage and feeding to the kiln.
“The services of ecovalor cover the whole value chain of waste management solutions, and we offer waste collection and logistics, including pre-treatment of waste for energy and material recovery. In addition, we contribute to reducing the volumes of waste going to landfills,” said Axel Pieters, Director of ecovalor.
The environment service of waste co-processing is a good contribution to the alleviation of climate change. The total CO2 emissions resulted when co-processing waste in a cement plant are significantly lower than those resulted when the cement plants would burn only traditional fuels and the waste would be separately incinerated or landfilled.
The Open Doors Day events in the cement plants of Holcim (Romania), initiated in 2005, are part of the transparent communication of the company with all stakeholders. The environmental protection is one of the priorities of Holcim (Romania) and this is the reason why the Open Doors Day events focus mainly on environmental issues.
