Managers under the spotlight - Hermann Povel, Sefar

Hermann POVEL

Plant Manager, Sefar SRL

Born in Germany, Hermann grew up in Switzerland in different locations (TI, BE, BL) and finished school there.

He then studied textiles in Germany and started working in a spinning mill in Austria. Working up to the position of COO in Austria, he moved afterwards to the last spinning mill of Switzerland (Hermann Bühler AG) in the position of COO.

Meanwhile, getting married to a Romanian lady, he learned to love Romania and decided together with his wife to move to Romania. In Sefar he found the right company and partner to take this step and since 2013 he is working as a plant manager for Sefar in Sighisoara.

Their two daughters finished school in Romania and accomplished their studies at ASE, in Bucharest. Now they have started to work in Bucharest.

As part of the CCE-R initiative meant to bring member managers under the spotlight, we had the opportunity to address Hermann a few questions from both human and professional perspectives. Enjoy the interview down below!

1. What does a working day look like for you?

Getting up early, after breakfast, me and my wife have a walk with our dogs to be prepared for the day. As Sefar has a big production, new projects, new buildings, visitors and daily problems, time never gets boring. Each day offers new issues with new solutions.

2. How is Hermann Povel outside the office?

I hope I’m quite a normal guy.

3. Tell us about one important project you’re working on this year.

We have finished in 2020 new constructions and are now mounting all kind of machines and installations. In the meantime we try to find the needed work-force to start up production. A new project will be to start investing in schools and education on a higher level. We want to invest in equipment and materials, furniture a.s.o. to make education possible on a higher level. We will be focussed more on practical education and also have some internship in our company. It is important to show to young people that they can also have a future at home, not only abroad.

4. What was one big innovation your industry has benefited from over the last few years?

Sefar is a modern company with products for all kind of use in different industries. A big step for us was the construction of an automatic high-rack-store for our rolls, making handling much easier.

5. What’s one great challenge the industry you’re operating in is currently facing?

At the moment we have unfortunately some great challenges, if we think about energy costs or political unpredictability. We all are directly affected by the loss of people going abroad and the lack of well trained young people ready to work in our companies. We have to face these problems and come with good solutions for this young generation to attract them to our companies. Short term thinking will not help, only long-term investments will make the change.

6. What’s your current hobby?

I like to go into the forest and to enjoy the wildlife of Romania. Hunting is my hobby, but it’s not a question of killing, it’s more being a part of wildlife, taking care of it. The experience in the Romanian forests with bears and wolves are very special, even if nowadays it’s getting also dangerous with the big number of bears.

7. What’s your favourite book?

At the moment I have started reading B. Clinton/ J. Patterson “In lipsa presedintelui“ in Romanian. I got it as a present from my team.

8. What piece of advice would you give to a newly appointed CEO?

Give yourself time to solve problems but also to your team. Try to be an example for your employees and do not ask from them what you are not ready to do on your own.
